Like a lovesick lad,
I blurted out the words
I had feared so long to speak,
And dared not write.
With quiet wonder,
She took them to her heart.
Returning them to me,
With a shy, uncertain smile.
She remained so silent, as,
I waited silent and also afraid,
Unsure if I had done right,
Until, raising up her eyes,
Placing my hand on her heart,
She blurted out the words.
