"... old portraits in a dark house..."
This brief line from "The Secret Garden", a Father Brown mystery, by Gilbert Keith Chesterton, put the idea in my head for the following poem.
OLD PORTRAITS IN A DARK HOUSE
By Donovan Baldwin
Upon the wall of my mind's museum,
Dim in this fading light of age
Faces from my fast forgotten past,
Memories faintly glimpsed
By the flare of far off lightning
A fading storm of desire to
See and hear and feel once more,
Those faces briefly viewed in
The flickering light of memory.
