WITHIN THE DARKENING WOODS
Poetry
I sit among decorations of light and dark, dancing And changing as sunlight peeks around, hides behind Gray clouds, streaming through branches swayed by wind, Varying the patterns on the hard dirt ground. There is life all around, birds singing, wind Blowing, trees swaying, shadows changing, But, not too far away, dark woods standing, Tree shadows blocking out the sun. Among all this light, activity, and life, I find myself reminded of boyhood memories, When I lived my adventures, exploring woods In sunlight, with the wind, surrounded by birdsong. Aware even in that life, of dark woods full of peace, And coolness, and silence. Silent as a tomb, They like to say, and that is how I thought Of the darkening woods somewhere else back then. Now, so many years later, I am again aware, Of the dark shadows underneath the trees, Which stand over my shoulder reminding me, It's almost time to walk into their cool world. • Donovan Baldwin

Night makes the familiar strange And even the bravest quivers with An atavistic fear sent downward Along the gnarled branches of The tree of man from ancestors Who sat beside their puny fire Brave souls by day who quaked At the unknown terrors Behind the cloak of night. • Donovan Baldwin

SUMMER 1963 - LESSON ON A CONSTRUCTION CREW
Poetry
Between high school and college, Built bridges most of the summer, Capped vats in a chemical plant. Hot, dirty work in the Florida sun. Or inside metal buildings, Huge, man made roasting ovens. Bologna sandwiches on white bread Covered with black hand prints. No place to wash up on the job, Bathroom often behind a tree. Carried hot steel, got burned, cut, Hit, and damn near passed out, Got cussed at, chilled in the heat, Old man 30 years old, no teeth, Lined face, taught me first lesson... "Don't turn out like me", he said. "Use your head, boy. Go to college, get that degree, Don't turn out like me, burned out, Used up at 30." He turned, spit, Walked away. Never knew that he taught me, More than how to be a carpenter. Went to college, learned accounting, But on the crew? That's where I grew up the first time. • Donovan Baldwin
